Let me start by saying I really enjoy this author and I buy all her books. This book was not her best work to me because I could not get past how awful she had the Jamaican female lead and her son talk in the novel. As someone whose parents are from Jamaica the way the author had these characters talk was very unnatural. The Jamaican son was made to talk as if he worked on in all inclusive resort and is forced to use "mon" in every other sentence when talking to the tourists. As for the female lead I don't know how to describe the weird formal way of speaking the author had her form sentences when talking to another character. Especially since the character went to high school in CT. I will end on a positive note and say the actual story was good and I was very surprised by the reveal.Tags : Holt, Her Ruthless Billionaire: 50 Loving States-Connecticut (Ruthless Tycoons Book 1) - Kindle edition by Theodora Taylor. Holt Her Ruthless Billionaire 50 Loving StatesConnecticut Ruthless Tycoons Book 1 edition by Theodora Taylor Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I enjoyed this book, It was well written although I had problems with some of the plot. Spoiler alert I wished Holt had done more to bond with his son after the discovery. And I wish the heroine had shown a little more backbone instead of tolerating the abuse. But I guess characters should not follow a set script and they will do and say things that upset/disappoint/delight the reader; that’s what makes it worth reading. No point reading a book that’s going to meet my exact expectations. I’ve tried to read one of those perfect little books and was bored to death. I loved the surprises though; even though some of the story angered me, I judge a book by whether it keeps me turning the pages. So well done. Over all, do not hesitate to support this author’s work.
Wow! It has taken me a minute to write this review. Holt is a bit mess in the beginning and Sylvie had no real backbone and was a small mess herself. Two broken people cannot be together and their beginning proved it.
My heart broke for Holt in how he was nearly crippled by the death of his mother and his brute of a father was of no help. after a bear death experience Holt grows up and becomes a bear replica of his father - cold, heartless and brutal. Then something happens and his world is all shook up.
Sylvie's home life was prison-like and he y not her was the warden. She had no experience with guys and that was a recipe for disaster with her contact and relationship with Holt. She is dealing with an addict and things implode. Her life is never the same afterwards until one day things come to , screeching Holt. (See what I did there, clever huh?)
But the book to find out what happened to them both and if they get the ending they deserve. Great job Theodora!!
Holt is a rich jackwad no matter what age! Yet he presents as sexy as hell and worth all the arrogance. In the novel upon first meeting Holt, you think, "This is how Richie Rich would have been in real life...throwing lavish drug and sex parties all night long while he sleeps all day long. Sylvie was the definition of "a good girl" and it was crushing to read the novel because it seemed as if Holt's hedonistic lifestyle was going to taint her. However the tension and sex between them was so intoxicating you couldn't help but root for one of them to give in and admit they loved the other. My favorite scene in the novel is when they finally realize they want to be together and Holt lets Sylvie know he is going to be the daddy of her next baby! It is like the ultimate alpha male move! Thank you Theodora Taylor for this beautiful novel!
I usually devour Theodora's books but this one had me cringing a little. I like the fact that it was an island girl this time as a heroine (a rare occurrence) but the Jamaican speech patterns had me cringeing. Most non-Jamaicans probably don't care but as an actual Jamaican myself I was a little annoyed. She did get other little 'Jamaican' details right, including the righteous anger and heavy expectations of parents. That aside, I liked the interesting nuances to the characters though I felt Holt's character could use some more exploration and fleshing out so we could better connect with his motives and actions. I like Ender and the idea of him being a prodigy (also a rare occurrence for black characters). I'd also like to see Amber's story; her history with Luca intrigues me.
The reviews had me hyped. There is no question that Theodora Taylor is an amazing writer and that her stories and characters draw you in even if you have some reservations on where she is going. That said, this one left me a little --meh-- I didn't hate it, loved the premise and I was really rooting for the characters--Holt is a steamy bad boy who is in search of love that will not leave him and Vee is an empath unsure why anyone but specifically Holt could be truly interested in her. What made it just alright for me is that there wasn't really any good plot development, besides the crisis in the beginning and a great deal of foreshadowing it just sort of waffled. I feel like I read the beginning of a great book and the ending of a good book, without much in the middle.
So even though I only gave it three stars, I still think it's worth the read. This author knows how to capture your attention with her characters. Just don't get too hyped, this wouldn't make it to the top 10 of her work in my opinion. No disrespect intended, just an honest review for readers like myself.
