One of the things I love about Sherrilyn Kenyon is the passion she put into every book of hers I've read. Darling and Z are fully fleshed characters you can't help but to fall in love with. You will see all of the other characters from previous books in this series with there crazy talk but also there love for each other. I've heard some criticism from other reviewers about trauma she puts her characters through. But one thing I respect about her is that she brings to the table a discussion that needs to be had. Abuse in many forms exist in this world, happens every day to children, women and men. The amazing thing is Sherrilyn Kenyon shows that the people aren't just stats. They can and often are amazing people that help others. They make darn sure that they don't become the monsters. the story was amazing and at its heart the message is clear. Stay strong and cherish those you hold dear. Thank you for another amazing read! I hope Nero gets his own story someday!Tags : Born of Silence [Sherrilyn Kenyon] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Born of Silence Sherrilyn Kenyon 9780446573313 Books Reviews
As the Resistance leader, Zarya Starska's only goal is to topple the government that destroyed her entire family and left her penniless. Her biggest asset is a mysterious man known only as Kere. She's about to find out just how little she knows about him...
I used to be a fan of Kenyon's (I've read most of her Dark Hunter books, including Archeron), but after this book I will think very hard before I buy another. The female lead was totally unlikable, selfish, and the chemistry they were supposed to have felt flat. Darling put up with years of abuse and his so called friends never tried to remove him, or even help him very much for that matter (sure, there were reasons, but I doubt that would have stopped any of them). It was disgusting. His family where a bunch of self-centered idiots, and I couldn't NOT believe that he would ever forgive his mother. With the amount of abuse he put up with I couldn't believe he was sane... and that's the abuse before he was captured. After the torture of the resistance? It was unbelievable that he would want anything to do with Zarya, even if she "didn't know".
As for Zarya, I couldn't believe that her group, *SPOILERS* that she is in CHARGE of, could hold a high level prisoner like that for MONTHS, across from her office (there was a reference to that, and how she would walk by the door and Darling could hear her, plus he said the room was across from her), and not know ANYTHING about how he was treated. Really? She ran a resistance group and was that clueless? She wouldn't at least check to see where he was, since he was the PRINCE of the kingdom she was trying to free? Instead she has to wait and see what Kere says? Then she walks into the room, sees the filth and how he was treated, and SLAPS him because he somehow might have captured her lover? Then has the gall to whine when she is thrown in the kitchens for a whole night? Man, it's been a long time since I was that mad over a character. Darling deserved a much better partner, I would have liked it more if somebody completely new came along and Zarya had to deal with it. I could say a lot more here, but I won't give more spoilers.
I give this a two because I have been reading a lot of self-published authors lately, and I have to admit that Kenyon's writing (even if it isn't her best work) is MUCH better than some I have read. There are improbable leaps in the story and it sometimes jumps around a lot and doesn't smoothly go from one scene to the next, but it's still not bad. Definitely NOT worth the price though, it should have been much lower. As other people have said, some of the torture could have been described a little less, and she would have still gotten mileage out of it.
Ok, so I was hooked from the very beginning! I have not been this intrigued since the book Dragonbane in the Dark Hunters Series. In Born of Silence when "Kerr" enters Zarya's home silently and turns off all the lights I had no idea what to expect. And then to find out that she has no idea of his real identity (Darling) and to still allow their relationship to further, to only be with him in the darkness is mysteriously sexy, and a little brave and scary too... In Dragonbane the most sexiest thing ever is when Max circles around his mate and eyes her like a predator about to devour his lover....HOT! Who knew that could be so arousing. And I got that same feeling when Zarya was with Kere completely in the dark and he could still see her but all she could do was feel him. And then the rest of the book is completely action packed! Great read!
At first I thought I liked the series even though her 1st book was exceedingly heavy with the child torture ( and don't kid yourself, it is not abuse it is torture), sodomy and disgusting prison torture for pages and pages and chapters and chapters until we readers are ready to hold up our hands and say PAX.. I found this to be the same case as in her Archeron book from the Dark Hunter series. Ms. Kenyon takes a character that readers have become invested in from prior books, and then changes their whole personalty through rape scenes, sodomy scenes, child and adult torture that go one and one and one page after page - sometimes a couple hundreds pages at a time to really get the reader nearly nauseous and certainly thinking am I willing to spend any more time on this book in the hopes these characters will survive her treatment..Does the author truly feel that people will continue to purchase her books if she continues this writing style.
I am sorry I started reading this series since I am OCD and need to find out the continuation of each character, but it will be with a set bias based on several of her books even though in a different series..The truth is that I cannot trust a book from an author that I have read for many years to
automatically be added to my pre-order list.
I am SO disappointed that Ms Kenyon continues to fall back into this black mindset when she writes. it may be it is cathartic for her to write due to her own real life situations, but frankly I would suggest she keep those writings in a journal (an unpublished journal) to held her work though her own issues with a medical professional.
